I was new outfitter in 1979 working with Dennis Bergstad as my mentor. I believe we were at Ed's home in early 1979 for meeting of TOPS (The Outfitter's Professional Society). TOPS was working with the Colorado Division of Wildlife to assume licensing of Outfitters from DOW. I distinctly remember the contoversy over the killing of the bear. The very next year I watched another grizzly bear (when there were nine in .Colorado) in what is now the Raggeds Wilderness Area. I am really happy to see Ed's story told. Thanks for writing it.

I was guided by Ed on two hunts. Back in 1989, he showed me where the bear attack took place, and the log he set on fire in an effort to stay warm the night he laid out there. When you see where this occurred, the time and distance it took to summon help, you begin to appreciate the difficulty in doing so.

Ed guided me on a bow elk hunt in 1985 or '86, I nor sure of the dates but will check. I was with a group of guys from Springfield, MO. There was 8 of us and I was the only one that was successful, bringing down a nice cow. Just wanted to touch base and say "hi". That hunt was truly the hunt of a lifetime!

I have read the story of the attack many times. Have always admired Ed and the type of person he seems to be. A true mountain man!! I have hunted Colorado for 20 years on my own. Never had the desire to hunt with a guide, but if he was still in the business it would be an honor to spend time in the mountains with him.
